Established in 1965, the University of Maryland Art Gallery traces its roots back to the foundational

collection of prints and drawings donated by Martin W. Brown to the Department of Art in 1955.

Initially housed in the Tawes Fine Arts Center, it later expanded to the Art-Sociology Building (now

the Parren J. Mitchell Art-Sociology Building) in 1976. The Martin W. Brown Collection serves as

the cornerstone of the Art Gallery's permanent collection, which has since grown to encompass over

5,000 objects through the generosity of alumni, donors, and supporters for nearly 60 years.

 

Since its inception, the Art Gallery has evolved into a leading academic museum, boasting one of

the most varied university collections in the Greater Washington, D.C. region. Highlights from the

collection include notable works by Peggy Bacon, John Baldessari, George Bellows, Honoré

Daumier, Todd Gray, Lee Krasner, Paul Reed, Rembrandt van Rijn, and Andy Warhol, alongside art

from diverse global cultures in Africa, Asia, and South America.
